Super Bowl Sunday in Japan SUCKS!  For one thing, I have to work.  2, I can`t watch it online unless I pay A LOT, and my
old computer can`t handle the links anyway.  3, it`s Super Bowl MONDAY here.  Super Bowl Sunday is a national holiday in
America and it`s better than fucking Christmas and I`m screwed.  Steelers 24   Packers 28.  I got that from the NEWS.  Damnit!
These people know NOTHING about football!

And the Great Bell Tolls…
Watching life slide by
feeling it slip away
like a strange, fleeting dream
floating away on a cold wind,
like smoke
lost in the blue,
Listening to the forbidding tick
of the Death Clock
as it moves us inexorably
closer to our doom,
The Great Bell Tolls,
nearing the final mystery
the end

put your hand on the latch
It creaks slowly open,

it`s over

Luckily, most of my English students are adults.  However, I do teach a few kids….
Teaching these boisterous kids English is like:
*teaching a spider monkey with A.D.D. how to play golf
*like teaching a cat how to put on Speedos and swim laps in an Olympic-sized swimming pool
*like teaching a golden retriever dog how to go fishing and drink beer
*like teaching a goldfish to walk
Making sense outta nonsense ain`t easy, lemme tell ya….
Without Chiharu, I`m afraid my life will become an empty shell of a beautiful thing that once was.
If I stay in Japan, I have to spend my life in a goddamned rice field, totally incommunicado.  No
matter what I do, we both lose.  There is no way home.  I feel as if I will never be really happy again.
Life totally fucking sucks.
I never promised you a rose garden.
No one ever promised me one either.
Question:  How many people do you need to fight Bruce Lee?
Answer: That`s easy, 35.  5 people attack frontal, 5 attack sneaky, 5 attack with weapons
and then 20 people come to collect the bodies after Bruce Lee is done with `em.

Interesting paradox–
Japanese front doors open outward, seemingly to welcome you, but they`re harder to break into….
American front doors open inward, so you can SLAM them in people`s faces, yet they are easier to break down….

3/11/11  THE LONGEST AND STRONGEST EARTHQUAKE I`VE EVER FELT IN MY LIFE.  It was at least 3 minutes long and it turned out that there were tsunamis
on the coast and it was an 8.9 fucking magnitude!  A massive disaster of the highest order.  Maximum destruction.
Being from LA, I usually just lie in bed for earthquakes and say to myself, `Aww, it`s only a 4.1.`  This one made me change my tune.  Chiharu and I went out and stood
together, locked in a fearful embrace, in the rice field.
Ironically, I am currently reading Murakami`s “Hard Boiled Wonderland andThe End of the World
The difference between a natural disaster IN ENGLISH and a FOREIGN LANGUAGE natural disaster is greater than the sum of its parts.

6 going on 7 earthquakes already today, and it`s only 2pm!
This whole fucking island is going into the shitter if these goddamned earthquakes keep up, I`m afraid, literally
sinking into the ocean.  You like to think the earth beneath your feet is solid, but it`s just NOT true.  We are
all floating on GIANT tectonic plates that are, in turn, floating on a fiery sea of molten lava.  Scary…but…what are ya gonna do?

One of the MANY weird things about Japan are the elevated speakers on poles and
towers that are strewn about town here in the Miyota Valley and on the hillsides…they
will suddenly burst into a torrent of sound with some jibber-jabber or perhaps various
songs or traditional Japanese music for some nameless festival or another.  Don`t ask

Ozymandias            by Percy Bysshe Shelley
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said, Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert.  Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed,
And on the pedestal these words appear;
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!`
Nothing beside remains.  Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

Big Rock Pizza Mountain
I had a dream.  I climbed a mountain of salt and flour.  At the top was a vast plateau, a giant pizza.
It surrounded me in every direction, sprawling and delicious.  It was circled by herbs and spices rising
overhead like trees.  There were red pepper mountains and a lake of beer.  The sun was setting, a
giant ball of sausage.  I laid down in a bed of fluffy cheese, my head rested upon a black olive and
I covered myself with a sheet of warm pepperoni.  I baked in the oven of life…

First spring bike ride of the year.  I will follow it up tomorrow with a skateboard run to Karuizawa…
The rewards of my journeys far outweigh the risks…
That`s right….I DO shit in the woods….even in Japan…..HA HA HA!!!!
(when ya gotta go, ya gotta go…….)
5/3/11  Tuesday
Alright then, an EPIC ride to Karuizawa on my skateboard–HOWEVER–after flopping around on my fat ass the whole
goddamned winter, I am hideously out of shape.  My feet ache, my knees hurt and I am in pain.  I am demoralized,
thinking that 42 is too old to be skateboarding up and down mountains and yet, I am having a GREAT time and I REFUSE
to give it up.  I will never stop (until I HAVE to).  I WILL get back in shape.  I blame the winter.

Amazing, completely empty, trees, lake, forgotten park with rotting benches, abandoned swing set….

Paraphrased from Raymond Chandler (King of the One-Liner)
How ya doin`, Shamus?
Philip Marlowe in Los Angeles;
“No feelings at all was exactly right.  I was as hollow and empty as the spaces between the stars.
When I got home I mixed a stiff one and stood by the open window in the living room and sipped
it and listened to the ground swell of the traffic on Laurel Canyon Boulevard and looked at the glare
of the big, angry city hanging over the shoulder of the hills through which the boulevard had been
cut.  Far off the banshee wail of police or fire sirens rose and fell, never for very long completely
silent.  Twenty four hours a day somebody is running, somebody else is trying to catch him.  Out
there in the night of a thousand crimes people were dying, being maimed, cut by flying glass,
crushed against steering wheels or under heavy car tires.  People were being beaten, robbed,
strangled, raped, and murdered.  People were hungry, sick, bored, desperate with loneliness or
remorse or fear, angry, cruel, feverish, shaken by sobs.
A city no worse than others, a city rich and vigorous and full of pride, a city lost and beaten and
full of emptiness.  It all depends on where you sit and what your own private score is.  I didn’t have
one.  I didn`t care.  I finished the drink and went to bed.”

these tissues will deliver…
not bad, eh?  These are gonna be HUGE…
Nagano City yesterday was quite a trip.  A nice city, surrounded by mountains and filled with green trees
and old temples, it is not overly crowded like the air-conditioned nightmare of Tokyo.  The famous temple,
Zen-Koji, was a beautiful place, sedate and peaceful in appearance although there were enough tourists
there to make it feel a bit like Disneyland.  You could still find a little nook here or there for some quiet
contemplation.  We were fortunate enough to hear the monks do their little chant thing, a rare ceremony
usually witnessed by a privileged few.  We were given a gift of good luck and blessings.  I wandered
around in the pitch darkness below the temple and found the so-called `Key to Paradise.`  It was a
pretty amazing day….
