AS NIGHT FALLS…

Standard

By Tom H. Brooks 3

I
sit alone
by the sea
in the fading light
of afternoon…

footfalls echo
on the wooden planks
of the pier
and the air
is alive
with ocean spray
and light
The cries of seagulls
and
the laughter of children
the last rays of sunshine
angle shadows
across
throngs of humanity
and always
the music of the vast ocean
crashing
singing below…

As night falls
two young star-crossed lovers
kiss gently beneath
a lone streetlamp
bathed
in a warm pool of light
silhouetted
against a purple sky backdrop
Suddenly
couples are all around me
laughing and holding hands
and
I withdraw
further into shadows
deeper
into my own
private darkness…
