“To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

Every night and every morn
Some to misery are born,
Every morn and every night
Some are born to sweet delight.

Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night.

We are led to believe a lie
When we see not thro’ the eye,
Which was born in a night to perish in a night,
When the soul slept in beams of light.

God appears, and God is light,
To those poor souls who dwell in night;
But does a human form display
To those who dwell in realms of day.”

Let me tell you a parable, I once heard…

One day a scorpion was walking beside a river.  The river had a strong current and he had no way to get across.  He came upon a fox and he asked the fox, “If I climb upon your back, will you swim me across the river?”  The fox thought for a very short moment and answered, “Oh no, then you would sting me and I would drown.”  The scorpion gave a swift answer, “No, I wouldn`t do that.  Then we would both drown.”  The fox considered this and then decided to allow it.  The scorpion climbed on the fox`s back and the fox began to swim across the river.  About halfway across, the fox felt a sharp jab and a pain in his back and he realized that the scorpion had indeed stung him.  As they both began to sink in the rushing waters of the river, the fox looked at the scorpion and gasped, “Why did you do that?!?”  And the scorpion answered, “Because it is my nature.”

Chiharu and I went on an awesome urban adventure today.  I can say with certainty that Asakusa is most definitely one of the coolest areas of Tokyo.  Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Roppongi are for nighttime madness and partying with the younger kids and the crazy crowd.  Shinagawa and Shinbashi are great for architectural photography and skyscrapers.  Akihabara is the place for electronics and Manga, if you`re into that shit.  BUT…..Asakusa is really a slice of old Tokyo, which is rapidly disappearing in the face of the looming imminence of the 2020 Olympics.  The streets are often what could be called shitamachi , which basically means winding old-school streets.  There are tons of cool little izakaya places (small informal beer, sake and food bars).  Also there is a lot of delicious street food and chairs and tables right out on the street, perfect for people watching, eating, smoking and drinking.  We found a back street in a weekend-only Yakuza horserace betting area and we had some beers and ume-shu (plum wine).  Along with some delicious food, this was a perfect way to while away the hours on a sunny, windy Saturday afternoon.  We ate gyu-suji no niko mi (Japanese beef and tofu stew in an amazing broth).  We also had kakiage (vegetable tempura), yakitori (bbq grilled chicken on a stick), and menchikatsu (deep fried ground beef burger) with karashi (spicy yellow mustard).  There was more, but I can`t remember the names of everything.  It was all just too good.  An awesome day all around….not only was it an adventure in the present sense, but it also seemed like a bit of time travel, a trip into the past….

I actually once took a photo in Japan of a sign that said “JAPANESE ONLY.”
Now, of course, this is totally ridiculous and xenophobic and racist, but I laughed anyway…
This is an example of my angry monologue rant to ANYONE who treats me with even a hint of foreigner dislike or disrespect….(TOTAL sarcasm, ALL of it…exaggerated voice and a lot of extreme hand gestures and waving around of the arms; this type of behavior alarms the Japanese)

Chiharu and I had an EPIC road trip to Shizuoka Prefecture to the magical forgotten town of Heda, nestled there between the mountains and the sea.  Also we visited the unbelievable place called Dogashima, with the green floating islands. Oh, and let`s not forget the OLD town of Shuzenji (807 A.D.) up in the mountains.  It was all just too much to describe here, so I will let my photos on Flickr and Instagram do the talking and storytelling for me on this one….

“My sickness courted
bad habits borne from
a snake’s promise of
the absence of pain.

But then
there’s always been pain
to deal with. I
saw two options:
Coca and Poppy vs. Herb and Grain
Sounds like a tag-team match
of rejected Care Bears.

Never chased dragons,
snorting and cooking
seemed as unnatural as their
alchemized mythos.

And not to the purity
such as it was
of the tiny evils done
to me by me, from the herb
or the grain.
Natural is still nature,
and nothing else kills
surer than that.

The latter appeared
a mindless time-fuck,
the former scared me into
suburban inoculation,
vaccinating me
from the methods of my heroes.

After all I had my opiate,
not the usual God or God’s
chief rep money,
they were abandoned
before they could disappoint
at the end –

It was –

Apathy, that which allows
you to put on that face and meet the
terribly loud incongruous faces of
these meat snowflakes,
angels fall,
but so do lemmings,
and for far less than
the kingdom of heaven,
so my opiate was a moat to this miasma
that came organically
for a time.

Then a break,
no, not a break, a
veritable sabotage
to my system, my stupid
thankless entitled vile carbonated
climate-controlled system.

Overfed to oblivion
as to what is wanting
until a greater power changes
the conditions of existence.

not from bad habits
or a dirty world.
An attack from within,
my immunity’s thirty pieces of silver
worth of betrayal.

The betrayal forced
a break-up with herb and grain,
feeling cheated,
they rejected my advances.

With standards quelled
like a bloodless coup
and my immunity’s betrayal,
I regress to a sailor on leave,
where pain and want
surpass sense and dignity.

So out of desperation
I hooked up with Opiate.
Casually at first,
no overnighters and nothing
kept in drawers or bathrooms.
It was refreshing,

Opiate started to take
this suburbanite
for longer trips – overnighters, even
weekends with the family,
soon I could not sleep
without Opiate
with me.

It was bliss – painless –
the catatonia inn’s
dilated grin
is always alight
and vacant.

But without
any feeling
the healing
is not scratched.

The sickness
that stole
my immunity
was gone.

But still
that hole
was filled
a vacuous hibernal
whose solstice
had its eye
on keeping me in its
shadow indefinitely.

It wasn’t Euphoria,
or Inspiration,
or Providence,
that broke me from
Opiate’s swaddle.

I could no more feel
these things than
a hurricane could feel
the frantic beating
of a bird’s’ wings.

The Why of
my sudden break-up
with Opiate
is unimportant
and honestly
I searched
for an answer I
never actually wanted.

Suddenly that
energy with so much
potential suppressed
by the receptive Opiate
became kinetic.

Then I felt everything.

one cycle of the Moon
the low tides that I swam in
ebbed and I was crushed
against the rocks by a
set of spirit breakers

There I lay.
The beach?
I am not moving
but yet the sea is still drowning me, pulling me under
Where have I landed?
A Beach?
Refer to the checklist below:

Crippling Anxiety,
Square-knot stomach,,
White knuckles in a lightless void,
heat from a scream-filled pillow,
crippling anxiety,
pennies and seashells wafting from a bedside bucket,
colon tighter than a snare drum,
reality’s physical manifestations stacked like tinder and set aside are now set alight,
also crippling anxiety.
No, not a beach,
this is the place one comes back to
since breaching the chrysalis,
where life is re-met.

While my mind chanted for its sanity,
My body screamed
in this quarrelsome age
in an unfamiliar tongue,
aching, longing, for Opiate.

Unchristlike in all but this,
in three days I emerged reborn from under
the rock that I built from ashes
of churches with prescription pads
for hymnals and
Opiates for sacraments. ”

poem by Todd Schultz

“They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate:
I think they have no portion in us after
We pass the gate.

They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream.”

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery – celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.”

Weep for the future

because the world is mired

deep in war and hatred.

It always has been,

but it isn`t getting any better.

Shed a tear

for the earth itself

as we chip away

at her beautiful landscapes

and oceans and rivers;

as we continue to destroy

her fragile ecosystems

with our carelessness and apathy

and the poisoned juggernaut of industry.

How long can she hold up

under the onslaught?

Weep for the racism,

the violent religious disputes,

and the insane tribal separatism.

Lament the general chaos

and the lack of understanding

and/or acceptance of

our myriad differences.

Weep for the children,

our future, so to speak,

who are barely even given

a fighting chance;

the children who will inherit

the shambles of the world

we leave behind for them.

Weep for the kids

who grow up alone

on the TV and internet

and violent video games,

who learn everything they

know from Twitter,

the ones who barely know

or care to understand

the future dilemmas

that they will one day face.

Weep for all of us

on this hideously overpopulated

blue-green sphere as we spin

helplessly through the cosmos

exponentially propagating

our own self-destruction.

Weep for the lost,

the desensitized,

the numbed and

the despairing masses

who struggle without hope

towards an uncertain future;

the people who move through

this mad world existing

by burying their heads in the sand

and living in absolute denial

of our impending doom

and our own ridiculous stupidity.

The doomsday clock has been ticking

for a long, long time now.

It`s five to midnight.

Can love save us now?

No one knows.

I hate you.

I love you.

I don`t know anymore.

I think I`ll just go watch TV.

Don`t pretend to understand…

How irreparably changed my life has become.  It`s always the last day of summer and I`ve been left out in the cold with no door to get back in.  I`ll grant you I`ve had more than my share of poignant moments.  Life passes most people by while they`re making grand plans for it.  Throughout my lifetime, I`ve left pieces of my heart here and there.  And now, there`s almost not enough left to stay alive.  But I force a smile, knowing that my ambition far exceeded my talent.  There are no more white horses or pretty ladies at my door.”

My lovely wife took off for the mountains today to see her family.  I always offer to send her off on the bullet train, but she prefers the bus because the train makes her a little motion sick.  So, I walked her to the station at 5am through the dark morning streets.  I said it smelled like rain, even though the forecast said nothing about it.  Well, it turned out I was right because I`m a fucking animal like that.  She sent me a text from Ikebukuro that it was pouring.  Anyway, I went back to sleep for a snooze for a little while because it was so damn early.  Just before I woke up, I had a super-vivid dream that I woke up and she was already home again.  She was standing before me, looking beautiful as always and unpacking her bag.  I told her what a nice surprise and asked why she was home and she told me it was because of the torrential downpour and she thought it would be dangerous to ride the bus.  I drifted off again feeling relieved and happy that she had made this decision.  So THEN I REALLY WOKE UP, and she WASN`T home and it was dumping rain outside.  I had a bit of a panic attack when I came to my senses because I realized I`d been dreaming and it was really coming down out there.  I didn`t want to think about her out on some highway with a half-blind Japanese driver speeding through the storm in order to keep to the goddamned schedule.  I sent her a text and continued to call her throughout the day.  To cut the story short, she was out getting a new Japanese passport at a government office and busy filling out papers and all that kind of bureaucratic bullshit and then she was busy running around with her dad and her phone was on silent from the bus.  So I had to fucking worry about her all day.  And believe me, I did.  I just had a bad, bad feeling, as if that dream had been an omen, or God forbid, even a ghost or shade!  Call me superstitious, laugh….whatever.  I just had a dark psychic feeling inside that wouldn`t go away, no matter how I tried to ignore it.  It was the dream that did it.

Well, in the end when we finally got to talk that night, she told me that indeed, while she was sleeping on the bus, she woke up to everyone else on the bus giving startled screams and yells as the bus jerked violently to one side.  She then realized that the driver had been driving way too recklessly fast and had narrowly escaped a freeway accident.  Ohhhhhhhh SHIT!  I fucking HATE IT when my latent psychic subconscious comes so close to the surface like that.  Basically, I hate it when I`M almost right.  I`m so fucking glad she`s okay!!  I just love that sweet wife of mine so much, and anybody who knows me is well aware of this.  Chiharu is the best and I really wish I could get her to start taking the train.  Life is just full of close calls, omens and unknown mysteries…….

Typhoon VONGFONG…….

It`s on the way, and frankly, it just SOUNDS bad….

Well, it turns out we were all wrong about this one.  Sure, it WAS bad in southern Japan, but by the time it reached here, it was only a tropical storm; just some strong winds gusts and above average rain.  It was nothing to write home about, and since it passed over in the middle of the night, I slept through 90% of the whole thing.  The funniest moment of the night was when I was just about to go to sleep.  The wind was howling outside and the rain was rattling on the windows and splattering the shutters.  Everything was darkness and violent movement.  That`s when the earthquake struck.  So it all happens at once.  A goddamned typhoon is hitting us outside and then, OF COURSE, an earthquake rumbler has to strike as well.  I actually started laughing – cracking up, really.  This is such a DISASTER COUNTRY…`s SO bad, you just have to see the humor in it….

“Actually, I have another thing I was gonna mention, just a thought I wanna throw out there.  If we`d known in 2001 we were staying in Afghanistan this long, we`d have made some very different choices, right?  Instead, our planning cycles rarely looked more than 12 months ahead.  So, it hasn`t been a 14-year war we`ve been waging; it`s been a 1-year war, waged 14 times.  I think we`re walking away with the job half done.”

This has been another one of those genius quotes slipped to you through the mainstream media under the guise of “fiction” or “drama”, when really, it is just ON POINT.  It reflects our deepest subconscious, the things we know but do not always acknowledge or put into the proper words.  You see, we arepaying attention, some of us, anyway; the problem is we just shove all our problems and complaints under the rug until it is possibly too late….

Remember the weirdest medical check EVER; a portable truck and roving medical clinic at a dirty fish market (it was mandatory for my company insurance purposes, or I NEVER would have gone, BELIEVE IT!)  We were ushered into a filthy office with peeling paint on the walls and the whole place stunk of dead fish.  Old men were standing in front smoking cigarettes.  I was irritated; “Is this place safe?  Are the needles gonna be clean?  Are they gonna steal our fucking kidneys?!?”

It was pure comedy, but really impossible to describe the absurdity of it.  My memory will have to suffice, and if, one night in the future, you and I are talking over cocktails or some such situation, I will relate this hysterically funny story to you live.  Until then, cheers my friend….

11/15/14, Saturday night…..

Always remember the night Brian and I stormed around the Chiba city of Funabashi after a brutally long work week, drinking all we could get our hands on and talking to every single person that looked even remotely interesting.  His Japanese is excellent, WAY better than mine, so this kind of communication was made more possible.  I speak just enough to get by in a minimal way, but together, we tore it up.  He then proceeded to take over the microphone of a band of musical street performers by the train station.  For at least an hour, we stood there, yelling at people and laughing our asses off.  The Japanese were also laughing and it WASN`T nervous laughter.  It was humorous and confused shock at our ridiculous audacity.  The drummer got a beat going and Brian was rapping and speaking profane gibberish to all the passersby, in Japanese AND English.

Funny shit, I tell ya, another thing that is just about impossible to really convey to you here.  You just had to be there…… was fucking spectacular…..

For those of you that don`t know, I teach the English language to elementary school kids aged 6 to 12 here in Tokyo, Japan.  Sometimes, my job feels really thankless.  Nobody knows what the fuck I`m talking about.  I think a lot of kids don`t even want to learn English.  Their parents are just dumping them off to get rid of them for a few hours and their interest in the language is absolute zero.  However, a couple things happened this week that may have validated the job that I`ve fallen into and perhaps even reinvigorated my enthusiasm, to some degree, anyway.

I am a fucking character as far as teachers go.  Some of them are such a goddamned bore, as I`m sure many of you already know from personal experience.  Well, not me!  I come up with the damnedest things!  I`ve been teaching these kids American movie lines.  There is NOTHING more CLASSIC than a room full of little Japanese kids saying, “I live my life a quarter mile at a time.” (Fast and Furious)  Or maybe, “Show me the money!!” (Jerry Maguire)  It is fucking hysterical and their parents even get a kick out of it.  This last weekend, this one little girl, who shall remain nameless, was downstairs (we`re on the second floor of a 10-story building), and at the end of the day, after class and all the moms were milling around, she turned around and waved to me and yelled, “Bye, Tom-teacher…..SHOW ME THE MONEY!!”  It was absolutely awesome!  You really have no idea, you had to be there.  Priceless, people.  On the same day, the daughter of one of my coworkers, (the girl speaks passable English), asked me why, despite the fact that I`m 45 years old, I look so young.  (She actually thought I was 28! Totally flattering, but anyone who knows me, would say, “HA!”)  In any case, her mom told her my real age and she was shocked.  After she asked me about my youthful appearance, of course I thanked her and told her that the key is to try to enjoy life the best that you can despite all the obstacles and never to stop being yourself.  I told her that I was always (90%) having a good time, and that was the reason.  Well, it turned out that she TOTALLY remembered what I said and told her mom about it and asked if it was true.  Mom told her that it seemed to work for me so she thought it was.  I was totally touched when her mom revealed this to me.  It made me feel like I actually COULD make an impression on these kids and give some small amount of hope to the seemingly hopeless future of this ridiculous world.  It pretty much made my day.  I think I may even start taking my teaching just a little bit more seriously, but I`ll never stop being my crazy self, because in my opinion, THAT is what captures the attention of those little people.  SHOW ME THE MONEY!!

As we grow older, we no longer know whom to awaken, the living or the dead.”

“A man should be resigned to knowing himself a little better each day if he hasn’t got the guts to put an end to his sniveling once and for all.”

“In the whole of your absurd past you discover so much that’s absurd, so much deceit and credulity, that it might be a good idea to stop being young this minute, to wait for youth to break away from you and pass you by, to watch it going away, receding in the distance, to see all its vanity, run your hand through the empty space it has left behind, take a last look at it, and then start moving, make sure your youth has really gone, and then calmly, all by yourself, cross to the other side of Time to see what people and things really look like.”

Here we go again…

FINALLY met a real and interesting Tokyo character named Aki. He was on the beach in Odaiba playing his guitar and singing. He was playing things like Bobby McFerrin`s Don`t Worry, Be Happy

and Bob Dylan`s All I Really Want To Do, Is Maybe Be Friends With You. He spoke really good English and he told us a little about his life and his adventures in Brighton, Great Britain where he learned English. He was a little goofy, but in a good way, like a Japanese beach bum. I had to appreciate that. He was a real true classic, this one….

Any jabroni with some fancy equipment and a couple college classes under his/her belt can take an acceptable photograph. With a little technical knowhow about F-stops and apertures and a nice tripod, any photo-monkey can pump out masses of typical pictures. It takes a real artist to SEE the shots and to get them by any means possible, even with a shitty T-mobile flip cellphone. Believe it, baby…

“At no time in the history of man has the world been so full of pain and anguish. Here and there, however, we meet with individuals who are untouched, unsullied, by the common grief. We say of them that they have died to the world. They live in the moment, fully, and the radiance which emanates from them is a perpetual song of joy […] like the clown, we go through the motions, forever simulating, forever postponing the grand event- we die struggling to get born. We never were, never are. We are always in the process of becoming. Forever outside”
― Henry Miller, The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder

“And we rise up and up into the stars with it. We go past the angels and the saints, past illumination itself and into the divine darkness, into the void, as we pass out of existence. In oblivion we are forgiven all things.”

Anne Rice

Out of all the great things about Japan, the worst thing is their INSANELY STUPID prejudice against tattoos. I have only one small tattoo I got 25 years ago in San Diego and I was denied entry into a BEAUTIFUL spa and pools over the ocean in Enoshima. It`s like this EVERYWHERE. The Japanese powers that be seem to think that ALL tattoos are associated with the Yakuza or the Triads or some other form of organized crime. BULLSHIT. Do I really look like fucking Yakuza to you little assholes?!? Seriously, open your minds a little. It`s not the kids, it`s the old people.

Fuck it. I`m going back to Tokyo to swim in the waterfall pool in the gardens of Nishikasai where nobody gives a shit about my Keep On Truckin` tattoo….

“This knowledge may change you somewhat. That`s all knowledge ever really does, I suppose…

Very few beings really seek knowledge in this world. Few really ask. On the contrary, they try to wring from the unknown the answers they have already shaped in their own minds – justifications, confirmations, forms of consolation without which they can`t go on. To REALLY ask is to open the door to the whirlwind. The answer may annihilate the question and the questioner.”

Anne Rice

I think of it here along with photography…

To me, a photograph is much more than just that. It is more than the sum of its parts. It is about light, shadow, composition, and above all….VISION. There are purists who do not believe in filters and photoshop and such things and that is fine with me. But I, on the other hand, often have a tendency to fool with the original composition and make it fall into the realm of something between a photograph and a painting, that which falls into the category of PURE ART…an entirely new creation that is singular and unique and something else altogether…

Okay, so in Tokyo, there is a direct ripoff of the Mexican restaurant, Chipotle. It is called Frijoles, and there is almost no difference at all (except there`s NO MEXICANS!).

Now, I can tell you, I REALLY miss IN-N-OUT BURGER. I love that place! I was thinking to myself today that if these Frijoles people can get away with it, so can I. Why not open a direct ripoff and call it HERE-N-THERE BURGER?!? Instead of the angled arrow logo, it could be a lightning bolt with a burger at the bottom. EXACTLY the same simple menu and recipes. HA! Instant success! Now if only I can find some investors… who’s in?!?

As the world spirals deeper and deeper into war and self-destruction; as religious differences cause irreparable rifts between tribes and cultures; as we destroy our earth ruthlessly and without remorse; as world weather patterns become more erratic and unpredictable and what would have been called a storm in yesteryear is now named “superstorm”; the story of Noah and The Great Deluge does, indeed, come to mind…..

The crystal clarity

of freedom

is infinitely better

than the torturous horror

of grim working imprisonment

To fly with the wind

through azure skies

and towering white clouds

or to swim in a muddy

trash-filled lake

The despair of the darkness

The long hours sliding by

like razor blades of time

cutting your flesh

as your soul bleeds out

To flounder there

in the shadowy depths

ever-reaching for the light

Seeking an exit

Waiting for a savior…

And the bell tolls

The day has ended

You are released again

into the bright world outside

Everything looks better now

You will make full use of your time

You will dream and live fully

The world is yours again,

for the night, at least,

for tomorrow, you die all over again…

Your whole life in the city, you hear the sirens passing by on the dark night streets, taking someone somewhere; alive or already dead, they are being carted away to somewhere they did not expect to be at a particular juncture in time. Accidents, random violence, peaceful death, choking, sickness, the black hand of fate. The sirens drone across the night city, coming and going constantly with horrifying regularity and you become numb to it. You ignore it. But some nights, after midnight, you notice them again. All is quiet, but suddenly, you hear it, that familiar drone… it`s calling out to you once again, echoing through the canyons of stone. As the years pass, it almost seems as if they`re circling around you, getting closer and closer, zeroing in on your location and howling at you like the hounds of hell, at last, come to steal you away from your life and this world to a place that none of us can really KNOW until we get there. Until then, you wait, sometimes shivering a little bit, a slight clammy chill rising on your flesh as the night closes in around you and threatens to smother you in its cold embrace. You lie there and you wonder….

After Midnight…
